Therapeutic
Transpersonal

* I don't want to have to keep saying "apparently", but remember that this should be assumed when reading all historical accounts.

Now that we know where we are, we can begin the search.

After Buddha stood up from the bodhi tree, one of the first things he did, apparently, was wonder whether he could or should teach what he realised.

The gods came down* and said, "Of course you should!", and one of the first twelve deeds of Buddha was to ordain five disciples and teach the four [noble] truths.

One limb of this methodology for liberation is the therapeutic practices ...

These might include:

  • trauma recovery

  • breathwork

  • psychological-fitness training

... the other limb is the transpersonal practices.

The aim of transpersonal development is to transcend the ego, and all the therapeutic practices are designed to support and complement the transpersonal training by cultivating the healthy ego we need to safely transcend our egoic limitations.

Practices include:

  • zazen ("just sitting" in Zen Buddhism)

  • plant medicine & psychedelic assisted therapy

  • whirling

  • contemplative prayer

  • yoga

  • breathework

Breathwork gets a mention here as well because it both helps to release and recover from trauma and may cause a transpersonal peak experience.
